I See You

This is a mix I made to accompany a techno yoga session. The tracks are mostly current and represent a sound I have developed over the past few years while djing for Rob Bennet as he leads techno yoga sessions. This summer I played at a number of festivals and I invite you to imagine the music playing outdoors on a great soundsystem as the early morning sun burns through the dawn chill.

Into Autumn

I made this mix to help ease the transition to autumn but the mood suits snow on the ground just as well. When space and distance bow to the rule of frozen earth and bare trees. Sound carries further, the surface of the canal is etched with frost and days drift by, light draining from them.
The picture above was taken on the island of Lindisfarne on my summer holidays last year and Chris Watson's field recording is from the same location.
The mix was made with traktor, a couple of records and an entanglement of inspiration for which I am grateful.

Review 2011

This year I’ve purchased fewer records, trawled through a lot more music online, and continued to marvel at reissues from Latin America and Africa, (largely)from the 60s and 70s. This mix has been leavened by a good deal of exploring amongst my vinyl collection. A lot of my listening has been to artists who are, for me, tried and trusted. I wonder to what extent this is a reaction to digital overload and a developing ruthlessness towards sounds that don’t ring my bell. And still, there are such a lot of sounds that do. For instance, the bleep.com annual 100 seems astonishingly rich.

Thanks for the music

Gives me solace on the long winter nights

Amadou Ballake -what a voice! and this track is just so tight. Off the excellent Analog Africa compilation, Bambara Mystic Soul - The Raw Sound of Burkina Faso 1974 - 1979

A track which typifies the raw energy of Columbian music from Cartagena

More from Cartagena, courtesy of Soundway Records. Impossible to resist!

One of the biggest tunes of the year for me. Heartening to hear someone who has been around for some time still producing great music

Take me back, take me back!

Off the Xango ep. More creamy delights from Jan Jelinek

Swoon! From her self-titled album on perlon

Warm housey goodness on an excellent ep- Chicago II

Like Pansonic discovering funk. Off a great album . I just love this

More from Mr Snaith and simply irresistible.

Because I only discovered it this year, because it stirs, and contains a reference to the horses coming.

Autonomous Aethernaut

In the aeons I’ve been away, this mix has struggled against earthly ties towards the limen of our universe. Disc 1, like all journeys into space, starts with rockety gusto, but all too soon settles, unsettled, into capsular claustrophobia. In space we have to make our own spass. Somehow retro-futuristically we get to the moon. But [spoiler!] it does not satisfy our sehnsucht and we come over all Major Tom and blast off again to the unknown. Disc 2 brings us to the blissed out eternity of home-from-home suspension, our endless exploration of…what? However far we go there is no escape from the earthbound voices. Space is our planet: we live there, we eat there, we bathe there.

Almost There

Distracting, and at times tedious, this mix nevertheless has a playful side and once it's sure it has your attention...

James Blake – don’t you think i do

Kowton – basic music knowledge
Ah! The dread

Maayan Nidam – feels like
Have I told you how much I love her music?

Properly disquieting. Saw him play out early this year. He did his thing and was not easy to love but it was somehow right for the place. And he played stereo mcs-connected.

Robag Wruhme – Blech Beule
Ever the rascal, and long may he weasel away.
